A dry seal gas holder in which a vertically movable piston 10, Fig. 1, is arranged in a container 1 of larger diameter and in which the space between the piston and the container is sealed by a curtain-like fabric element 11 of tubular form which co-operates with cylindrical abutment surfaces on the container and piston during movement of the latter, has at least one tension band 12 attached to the element 11 and disposed circumferentially of the same, the band being shorter than the abutment surface on the container to prevent excessive permanent circumferential elongation of the element due to stretching of its fabric under gas pressure. The element is composed of a fabric core impregnated and covered with an elastic, impervious substance such as rubber while each tension band, which may be attached continuously or at intervals to the element, consists of ring-shaped elements of cable 18, Fig. 3, embedded in a easing 19 of rubber or of chains, bare cables or pre-stretched woven bands. The bands, which have a tensile strength between 1000 and 5000 lbs. per inch of width, are attached to the element by cement or mechanical fasteners each comprising a metal plate 14, Fig. 6, which is overlapped by a fabric pad 20 attached by adhesive to the element, and provided with studs 15 that project through the band to receive nuts 17. The abutment surface on the piston is formed by a series of posts 8 to provide a vertically fluted surface which prevents the element 11 from creeping circumferentially. The invention may also be applied to a gas holder of the kind described in Specification 691,664 in which an additional structure is disposed in the space between the piston and the container and connected with each of these members by a seal.
