Abstract
Sulphur-containing products useful as antioxidants for mineral oils are prepared by reacting an "acid oil" with an alkali metal hydroxide in amount equivalent to the thiophenols in the oil and with a halohydrocarbon having at least two but not more than twice as many halogen atoms as carbon atoms, in amount at most equivalent to the thiophenols in the oil, and removing the unreacted components, the alkali metal halide, water and resinous components from the reaction mixture. By "acid oil" is meant the product containing thiophenols and possibly phenols, obtained in the refining of cracked gasoline by treating it with an alkaline solution and releasing the thiophenols and phenols from the alkaline solution by acidification. The halohydrocarbon can be added to the acid oil simultaneously with the alkali metal hydroxide or after the thiophenolate has been formed. Specified halogen compounds are dichloro- and dibromo-methane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 2,5-dibromo-2,5-dimethylhexane. Mixtures may be used. The alkali metal hydroxide is preferably used in an aqueous or alcoholic solution, and reaction temperatures of 70 DEG to 140 DEG or higher are generally used. The reaction mixture is afterwards separated into phases, if necessary by adding water, and the upper phase mixed with a diluent, e.g. gasoline. It is then washed with water, treated with a little dilute acid and distilled. The product may be deodorized by treatment with alcoholic caustic soda.ALSO:Sulphur-containing compounds which are substantially reaction products of thiophenolates and halohydrocarbons are used as antioxidants for mineral oils and for lubricants containing mineral oils. The products are prepared by reacting an "acid oil" with an alkali metal hydroxide in amount equivalent to the thiophenols in the oil and with a halohydrocarbon having at least two but not more than twice as many halogen atoms as carbon atoms, in amount at most equivalent to the thiophenols in the oil, and removing the unreacted components, halide, water and resinous components from the mixture. By "acid oil" is meant the product obtained in the refining of cracked gasoline by treating it with an alkaline solution and releasing the thiophenols and phenols by acidification. Special halohydrocarbons are dichloro-and dibromo-methane, 1, 2-dichlorethane, 1, 1, 2 trichloroethane, and 2, 5-dibromo-2, 5-dimethyl-hexane.
