Abstract

725,431. Buoyancy motors. HOVEN, A. VAN. Feb. 9, 1953 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 3644/53. Class 69 (1). A buoyancy motor consists of an outer cylinder 1, the open bottom of which penetrates into a liquid with substantially constant level, an inner cylinder 5 which is closed at the bottom and which slides in a fluid-tight aperture in the top of the outer cylinder, and means for raising and lowering the level of the liquid in the space 9 between the two cylinders. The means for altering the liquid level may be a source of vacuum connected to the top of the cylinder 1 or a source of liquid under pressure applied to the bottom of the cylinder which is momentarily isolated from the constant-level liquid. The sliding joint between the inner and outer cylinders may be replaced by a bellows and the inner cylinders of several motors may be connected by cranks to a common crankshaft.
