A book binding or cover made of multi-layer sheets of thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride sheets, has an outer layer 1 of soft sheet material extending over the whole binding and one or more inner plates 2 of hard thermoplastic sheet material corresponding to the flap or cover portions of the outer layer and of the same size ; the sheets 1 and plates 2 being welded to each other along their edges 3 in a high frequency field. The plates 2 may be varied in hardness and thickness to alter the final stiffness of the book and the back portion of the cover may have additional soft sheet portions 1 welded in position. The book block with its cover sheets and back cloth is glued in known manner into the back of the binding with a special adhesive for binding together paper, linen and plastic material.
