Abstract

724,678. Lathe details: gauging. COM. MONWEALTH ENGINEERING CO. OF OHIO. Feb. 17, 1953, No. 4454/53. Class 83 (3). An arrangement for continuously indicating the size of a workpiece being worked in a machine tool which has a work supporting means and a support for a cutting means movable relative thereto, is characterized in the provision of a feeler arm pivotally mounted on a slide movable relative to the work and engaging the work in the region being operated upon by said cutting means, there being means responsive to pivoting movements of said feeler arm for operating an indicating device. In one form the feeler arm 32 carried by a pillar 30 on an auxiliary adjustable slide 28 moves along with the tool saddle 16 on which it is supported. The feeler is connected with the movable arm 36 of an adjustable rheostat 38 connected in circuit with an electrical indicating instrument 44. Multiplying gearing may be used between the feeler and rheostat arms. In another form the feeler arm is connected by gearing to an oscillating light source which traces out the shape of the work on a screen as the saddle moves. An inscribing device which traces a chart may be used in place of the light beam. In connection with the arrangements shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the machine is preferably provided with a transparent viewing screen 56 having a chart 60, Fig. 4, on which the work outline, 62, Fig. 1, is drawn or printed. A bracket. 66, Fig. 4, within the headstock is moved along in timed relation with the tool-carrier by a screwed spindle 64. The bracket carries a light source 70 and an oscillatable mirror 72 which reflects a pencil of light from the source onto the screen 56 where it makes a trace which can be compared with the work outline. The mirror is supported on the shaft 74 of an electrical instrument movement 76, Fig. 5, which is connected in series with the rheostat 38 and battery 42 of the circuit shown in Fig. 2. A pivoted setting gauge 94, Fig. 2, is provided for positioning the tool and feeler arm at the start of an operation. The operative position of the gauge is shown in broken lines. An indicator used in conjunction with a template is also described, but this forms the subject-matter of Specification 724,679 which is referred to.
