Abstract
814,196. Milling; programming for machine tools. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 5, 1955 [Sept. 16, 1954], No. 26833/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Apparatus for accurately locating a tool relative to a workpiece comprises a rod extension to the tool-holder associated with a follow-up switch, whereby misalignment closes an energization circuit for a servomotor to reposition the tool. A multiple tool-holder comprises a turret 2, Fig. 1, carrying three chucks 15, 16, 17, the former carrying a tool 34 which is to be positioned relative to work secured to a table 1. An extension 18 of the tool is engaged by spring- loaded feeler arms 24, 25, Fig. 3, attached to micro-switches 28, 29, and 30, 31, so that displacement of the tool 34 and rod 18 in the X- direction closes one of the switches to cause a motor 7 to drive the turret 2 to the neutral position. The switches and feeler arms are carried in a casing 21 mounted on the main pillar 8. A further switch and feeler arrangement senses and adjusts displacements in the Y- direction. The follow-up switch may alternatively be replaced by strain-gauges, or a differential capacitor, or a differential photo-cell arrangement sensing deviation from the desired position. In one embodiment predetermined adjustment voltages are algebraically added to signals derived from a control record to accurately adjust the position of the tool.
