724,420. Pit props. HEWITT, H., and HEWITT, J. Feb. 19, 1953, No. 4632/53. Class 20(2). A pit prop comprises relatively slidable parts 1, 2 which are frictionally locked together by a wedge 5 which is squeezed upwardly when the load on the prop exceeds a predetermined amount, to allow the prop to shorten. The wedge 5 is mounted in a socket 3 on the part 2 between an inclined face 4 on the part 1 and an abutment member 6 in the socket 3, which is adjusted by a screw 9 and a wedge 7 to lie flat against the wedge 5. The position of the wedge 5 is indi. cated by a pin 10 which projects through the socket 3.
