Abstract

724,399. Mixing appliances. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 22, 1953 [Feb. 6, 1952No. 1845/53. Class 86. Apparatus for continuously blending latex and a preformed froth to form latex foam comprises one or more mixing chambers having a plurality of smooth rounded projections extending inwardly from the walls thereof and a discshaped rotor situated within the or each mixing chamber having a plurality of smooth rounded projections on both of its sides interdigitated with the projections on the walls of the chamber, the edge of the or each rotor being free of projections. As shown, top and bottom stators 29 and 30 and intermediate stators 28 are bolted together to form a series of mixing chambers having inwardly extending smoothsurfaced rounded projections 35 evenly spaced in concentric circles about the chambers. A shaft 49 carries a rotor in each chamber. On the upper surface of the top rotor 32 are radial fins 43 and on the lower surface of the rotor 32 and on the upper and lower surfaces of the other rotors 31 are smooth surfaced rounded projections 42 arranged symmetrically in concentric circles about their centres, interdigitated with the stator projections. Preformed froth is led under pressure through an opening 57 in a neck 39 of the stator 29. Compounded latex is led through a conduit 59 and mixes in a latex head 58 with gelling agent supplied from a conduit 60. The mixed latex and gelling agent flows down an inclined pipe 61 on to and then down the shaft 49 and is distributed in the preformed froth by the fins 43. The latex and froth flow about the rotors 32, 31 and are blended with a folding action by the projections 35, 42 and the foamed rubber product is discharged through an outlet 36 and conduit 38 to a mould (not shown). The shaft 49 is supported cantilever fashion, thus leaving an unrestricted flow path adjacent the outlet, and is connected at its upper end to a variable speed driving means.
