Abstract

724,259. Charging batteries. COMPAGNE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Aug. 17, 1950 [Sept. 16, 1949], No. 1255/53. Divided out of 724,175. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVII] An electric accumulator charging control element has a body which comprises an elongated hollow plug provided with a screw thread permitting it to be screwed into an accumulator cell instead of the usual plug whereby to dispose its two chambers 2, 4 inside and outside the accumulator respectively, and each of the chambers has a device responsive to the temperature in its respective zone, the two devices being connected together by means controlling an electric circuit situated partly outside the element such means responding to changes in the devices which obtain with a given temperature difference between the two zones. As shown, the respective devices comprise bellows 5, 7 urged apart from each other by springs 6, 9 and the means comprise rods 10, 11 pivotally joined by a cross-member 12 which bears at its mid point a movable contact 13 which co-operates with a fixed contact 14. In operation, change of ambient temperature is effective both inside and outside the accumulator, and both sets of bellows and rods move a similar amount and contact 13 remains stationary; but change only of accumulator internal temperature causes bellows 5 to move contact 13 to regulate the charging circuit. Regulation of the temperature differential at which the contacts operate may be provided by movement of a threaded cap 17 to deform a displaceable stop 15 which engages bellows 7. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown), the respective devices comprise pairs of resistances and the means comprise connections to form them into a Wheatstone bridge the current in the central diagonal of which is responsive to the temperature differential. Specification 724,175 is referred to.
