Abstract

724,078. Pile fabrics. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. May 28, 1951 [June 30, 1950], No. 16344/50. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] A method of making a pile fabric comprises implanting fibres pilewise, by means of an electrostatic field, in a layer of foamed rubber latex on a backing material and converting the foamed latex to sponge rubber. The backing may be a woven fabric. Backing material 1 on a roll 2 passes between nip rollers 3 and a blade 5 spreads latex from a tank 7 on the upper surface of the backing. The backing then passes between electrodes 10 and 19. Fibres from a hopper 25 are fed by brushes 26, 27 to a conveyer 20, pass between the electrodes and beneath the backing, and become implanted in the latex on the backing. A rotating hexagonal bar 11, described in Specification 704,456, shakes loose fibres from the backing for collection in a tray 28. The pile fabric then passes through a heating chamber 14 having an air inlet 15 and outlet 16 and is wound on a roll 18. The brush 27 rotates at approximately four times the speed of the brush 26. The latex may be foamed by beating air into it, preferably after the addition of a foam-stabilizing agent, or alternatively a blowing agent which liberates gas on heating may be used.
