An accumulator in which the separ. ators press against the whole area of the plates to support the active material is provided with positive plates in the form of grids of lead or an alloy of lead which are less than 0.06 inch in thickness and of which the openings have a width at least eight times the thickness of the plate. If the openings are not rectangular an average width is calculated by dividing the area of an opening by its longest straight dimension. The bars may be of circular, oval, or other shape and additional weak bars which are soon converted into lead peroxide may be provided. The whole pack of plates and separators may be inserted in the container under pressure. Fig. 3 shows an edge view of a plate in which the width b of an opening 24 bounded by bars 22 is greater tiian eight times the thickness of the plate. The separators may overlap all four edges of the plates to avoid free spaces in the container, the electrolyte being absorbed in the separators and plates. Specification 656,111 is referred to.
