Abstract

723,671. Purifying water. AKT.-GES. FUER GRUNDWASSERBAUTEN. April 8. 1952. [April 13, 1951] No. 8921/52. Class 46. [Also in Groups II, VI and XXVIII] In a method for the dosed delivery of gas, more particularly at a low rate, a fixed quantity of gas is admitted into an expansion chamber by each single operation of a periodically operating valve in the gas supply line, the expanded gas being continuously withdrawn from the expansion space at a rate depending upon the pressure in the expansion space, this pressure varying with the number of operations of the valve per unit of time. In a water purifying apparatus, water to which a small proportion of chlorine is to be added, flows through a water meter 7, Fig. 2, by which means an electric solenoid 5 is energized periodically at a rate proportional to the rate of flow of the water. Chlorine enters through a connection 27 Fig. 1, and is periodically delivered in dosed quantities into an expansion space 16 by a measured quantities delivery valve 3 which is operated by the solenoid 5, a pressure of chlorine gas being thereby built up in the expansion space 16 in proportion to the rate of flow of water. The valve 3 comprises an actuating spindle 4 carrying two valve discs 9 and 10 at opposite ends of a cylindrical member 15, the discs being arranged to alternately engage knife edges 11, 12 on a flange 14 of the valve housing, the space between the flange 14 and cylinder 15 forming a measuring space for a quantity of gas which is delivered into the space 16 at each single operation of the valve. A proportion of the water flows through an injector 19 having a gas inlet 17 which communicates with the space 16 and the rate of delivery of gas from the space 16 through the inlet 17 into the water is proportional to the pressure in the space 16. The portion of the water which passes through the injector 19 is mixed' with the rest of the water in an injector 25. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the valve which supplies gas to the space 16 comprises a single obturating member cooperating with a seating, the valve being opened by the solenoid for predetermined constant periods, at a rate proportional to the rate of water flow. The method is applicable to narcosis for which purpose the solenoid 5 may be controlled manually or in dependence upon the number of breaths of the patient.
