Abstract

723,496. Magnetic structures. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., TOMBS, N. C., and LAMB, W. Oct. 5, 1953 [Oct. 27, 1952], No. 26955/52. Class 38 (2). In making permanent magnets, magnetizable metallic powder which consists mainly of one or more of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel, the particles being of colloidal dimensions, and therefore pyrophoric, is covered with distilled water when freshly prepared, the water being removed part of the way through the agglomeration process. The water is preferably deaerated and kept in contact with the powder for not more than three hours. A suitable iron powder may be produced by decomposition and reduction of iron formate, oxalate or oxides under hydrogen, the distilled water being initially 'present or subsequently run into the vessel. Excess water is drained away and the residual thick paste compressed at 75 tons/square inch. A small proportion of other material, such as calcium oxide or carbonate may be present. Particulars are given of magnetic properties of material collected under distilled water, and for comparison, under benzene, and coated with " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Mark). Specification 590,392 is referred to.
