Abstract
Granular polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride are produced by polymerization, in the absence of a dispersing agent, in a medium containing an organic water-miscible solvent such as methyl, ethyl or propyl alcohol, acetone or methyl acetate, together with a greater weight of water such that the medium separates into two phases at the polymerization temperature. Up to 30 per cent of the miscible solvent may be replaced by a water-immiscible organic solvent such as butanol, amyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, ethyl, propyl or butyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, benzene, toluene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or ethyl chloride. Copolymers may be made with vinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate or benzoate and acrylic, fumaric, maleic or crotonic acids or esters. Catalysts specified are hydrogen peroxide with sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate with or without ferrous ammonium sulphate. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of plasticizers and fillers and buffer agents such as sodium acetate with acetic acid. The examples describe the continuous addition of the monomer and hydrogen peroxide.
