Abstract

723,007. Printing-machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO. Dec. 6, 1951 [April 20, 1951], No. 28646/51. Class 100 (2). Inking apparatus.-In a printing press having a pair of rigid cylinders in spaced parallel relationship, a rubber inking roller contacting both cylinders is carried by bearing blocks simultaneously movable in frames along a straight line path towards and away from the cylinders, and manually adjustable means on the blocks are provided adapted to co-operate with a fixed surface on the frames for adjusting the blocks to a desired operative position in which the roller rides in contact with the cylinders, the frames being so oriented that the roller remains substantially equidistant from both of the cylinders during the adjusting movement. The adjustment means of the bearing blocks of ink rollers varying by Œ“ inch of a specified nominal diameter may be pre-set while the roller and blocks are removed from the printing-machine, thus enabling ink rollers to be quickly exchanged; a jig for pre-setting is described. The invention may be applied to rubber rollers arranged between two ink drums, or, as shown in Fig. 1, to two rubber rollers 11, 12 arranged between an ink drum 13 and a plate cylinder 10. The roller shafts are carried. in ball-bearings 28 recessed into bearing-blocks 22 slidable in frames 20, Fig. 4, screwed to the press frame 21; adjustable stops 25 with locknuts 27 are screwed into the blocks 22 and are caused to abut against plates 26, secured to the frames 20, by springs 32 acting on plates 34 carried by clamps 30 hinged at 31 and held closed by nuts on swivel bolts 291; the rollers 11, 12 may be retracted, against the springs 32, by double cams 40 which act on the surfaces 42 of the blocks 22 and are pinned to a manuallyrotatable shaft 41 extending across the press. The bearing-blocks 22 slide in a straight line path such that the roller axes move approximately on the hyperbolic locus of true equidistance from the cylinders 10, 13; the nominal radii of the rollers 11, 12 are such that the line joining the centres of the cylinders 10, 13 subtends angles of 120 degrees and about 106 degrees at their respective centres, so that variations of their actual radii will require respectively a 2: 1 and 1<SP>2</SP>/ 3 : 1 shift of the bearing- blocks. The jig shown in Fig. 6 enables the adjustment for this to be made with the roller and bearing-blocks out of the press: pedestals 62, 63 slidable along ways 61 on a bed 60 have machined wells 64, 65 to receive the bearing-blocks, and dial indicators 66, 67 show the adjustment of the stops 25 while an indicator 71 on a slidable support 70 shows the roller radius; the indicator 71 may be geared, or have a modified scale; to allow for the 2: 1 or 1<SP>2</SP>/ 3 : 1 ratios referred to above so that correct adjustment is obtained when the three indicators show the same reading. The jig indicators are first calibrated using a reference roller whose actual radius is the nominal radius and whose stops 25 have been set in the press to the correct position as established by known tests.
