Abstract

722,989. Corrugating paper &c. AKT.- GES. DER MASCHINENFABRIK VON T. BELL & CIE. April 16, 1952 [June 27, 1951; Aug. 13, 1951], No. 5498/54. Divided out of 722,923. Class 141. Apparatus for manufacturing longitudinally corrugated paper or cardboard, particularly for subsequent assembly with transversely corrugated paper &c., by producing one longitudinal corrugation after another in a continuous run of paper &c., comprises an endless flexible belt having parallel longitudinal grooves and forming means engaging said grooves at stationary longitudinally and laterally offset points for pressing the paper &c. into the grooves. As shown in Fig. 1, the grooved belt 39 is supported by rollers 40, 43 and a frame 6 which is V-shaped in plan carries forming shoes 7 longitudinally offset so that their forward ends are arranged in a forwardly pointing wedge pattern. Each shoe is fixed to an intermediate member mounted in a guide slot of the frame so as to be laterally displaceable. Guides 44 are provided at the rear to engage the grooves of the belt 39 and a heating box 26 and a co-operating pressing roller 45 set the corrugations. In another construction, Fig. 6, the forming shoes are mounted in similar staggered relation in transverse slots 48 so as to be laterally movable in a support 46. A belt 39 supported by rollers 40, 43 passes over the shoes and guide rods 49 swingably supported on pins 50 engage the corrugations. Grooving rollers 45 co-operate with a heating box 26 to set the corrugations. Further layers 32 may be bonded to the paper &c. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, belts 54 all pass over a common driving roller 55, common rollers 56, 57 and then over individual corrugating shafts 58. A single belt runs over the foremost shaft to form the central corrugation whilst the second shaft supports two additional belts and so on, these belts forcing the paper into grooves of a bottom belt 39. In a final embodiment, Fig. 12, bottom and top grooved belts 63, 64 are supported by idle rollers 65, 65a and driven rollers 66, 67 together with supporting rollers 74 to 79 and holding-down rollers 80 to 85 respectively. The first pair of rollers 74, 80 taper conically to both sides of the centre line whilst subsequent pairs have cylindrical central portions of increasing length and shorter conical portions than preceding ones to effect the successive corrugations from the centre outwards. Guiding rods 71 lead the corrugated paper to a pair of heating boxes 72, 73.
