Abstract
722,691. Type-casting machines. MONOTYPE CORPORATION, Ltd. May 26; 1953, No. 14594/53. Class 100 (3). Metal pumps.-Relates to pump-operating mechanism for an individual-type casting machine comprising two levers linked together intermediate their ends and coupled respectively one to the pump body and the other to the pump piston, the levers being moved in unison and then relatively to each other to operate the piston. Spring-operated pump elevating levers are provided to seat the nozzle in the mould, and a detent acts thereon to interrupt temporarily the seating of the nozzle, so that on release of the detent at a predetermined time, the pump elevating levers are given an accelerated movement by their operating spring to seat the nozzle in the mould. In a machine of the general construction described in Specification 21014/07, [Class 100], the rise of the pump-elevating lever N‹ when the stud N<SP>8</SP> is raised by the driving cam is delayed by a detent N<SP>18</SP> carried on a cranked lever N<SP>14</SP>, N<SP>15</SP>. When the detent is released, the pump-elevating spring N<SP>7</SP> causes an accelerated movement of the nozzle to ensure proper seating in the mould. The lever arm N<SP>15</SP> is pivoted to a slide N<SP>21</SP> balanced in the position shown by opposed springs N<SP>26</SP>, N<SP>30</SP>. The slide carries an adjustable abutment N<SP>39</SP>, held in its adjusted position by a detent N<SP>42</SP>, which at a predetermined point in the machine cycle is engaged by rising abutments P<SP>17</SP> so as to, raise the slide and release the lever N‹. The abutments P<SP>17</SP> are attached to the driving-rod and are utilized also to release the latch for operating the pump piston as described in Specification 21014/07, [Class 100]. The abutments P<SP>17</SP> comprise a plurality of leaves secured by a winged screw P<SP>18</SP> and individually pivotable out of position beneath the latch arm P<SP>16</SP> so as to vary the force applied to the piston. When the slide is allowed to fall, the detent N<SP>18</SP> rests against the end of the lever N<SP>9</SP> until the latter is depressed by the stud N<SP>8</SP> and the detent moves into locking position. When the slide N<SP>21</SP> is in its upper position, it can be retained there by a catch N<SP>34</SP> so as to hold the delay mechanism out of operation.
