Abstract
A dry-cleaning composition for carpets and the like comprises a powdered absorbent mixed with at least one light solvent and a medium or a heavy solvent. The mixture of solvents is preferably 25 to 30 per cent. of the total weight of the composition, in the proportion of 10 to 15 per cent. of the light solvent and 15 to 20 per cent. of the medium or heavy solvent. In use, the light solvents evaporate but the stains dissolved thereby remain in solution in the medium or heavy solvents. The powdered absorbent is preferably a colloidal clay such as bentonite. The light solvents specified are trichlorethylene and toluene, the medium solvents are xylene and isoamyl acetate, and the heavy solvents are pine essence and butyl glycol. The compositions may also contain at least one synthetic detergent of the anionic, cationic or non-ionic type, such as dodecylbenzene sodium sulphonate, esters of fatty acids and of polyalcohols or of sorbitan, condensation products of ethylene oxide and, as particularly exemplified, laurate of diethylene glycol. Other optional ingredients include disinfectants, such as lauryl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride; insecticides, such as hexachloro-cyclohexane and dichloro-dipthenyl-trichlorethane; substances of slight alkalinity, such as morpholine; and substances to facilitate penetration of the insecticide when used, such as benzyl alcohol.
