Abstract
722,400. Labelling machines. BRAASTAD, E. Dec. 19, 1952, No. 32239/52. Class 73 In a machine for labelling articles such as bottles, a continuous label strip is fed to the labelling station by a feeding mechanism and an actuating arm 9 in the path of the article 14 is connected to the feeder 11 by a spring 26 so that movement of the article to the labelling station gives the impulse necessary for feeding the labelling strip. The feeder 11 is mounted on a channel member 5 which is pivoted to a stand 4. An arm 21 on the member 5 extends below the feeding station. When the arm 9 is depressed by the article 14a shearing member 23 on the member 5 passes near a knife 7 and cuts off a label 20 from the strip. The label wraps around the container as the latter is pressed down into a yielding labelling support formed by an endless band 15 supported on two pins 16, 17 and stretched by a leaf spring 19. After labelling the container is lifted and a spring 24 swings the channel member 5 back to its original position, a spring 25 returns the gripping member 11 and the spring 26 returns the arm 9. In an alternative embodiment a feed channel member 38 for the label strip 39 is pivotally supported at 40 to the frame 31. The labelling strip extends through an opening 45 in a plate 46 and projects over a labelling support formed by an endless band 35 kept taut by a spring 36. A bail-shaped actuating member 47 is attached to the bridge 38. When a container 48 is moved into contact with the band 35 it acts upon the bail 47 so that the bridge 38 swings into the position shown in Fig. 7 whereby the label 39 is cut off in the opening 45 by a knife on the bridge and a knife 50 on the plate 46. The label feeding mechanism comprises a runner 51 with gripping members 52, 53. The runner 51 is connected to the bail 47 by links 55, 56, 57 and 58. Undesirable feeding of the labelling strip 39 when the container 48 is situated at the labelling station or is moving therefrom is prevented by a peg 66 co-operating with the end 67 of a plate 63 (Fig. 7). The yielding belt 15, 35 may be replaced by a rigid support 35<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 9), the actuating member 47<SP>1</SP> extending upwardly through a cutout in the support.
