Abstract

[Cognate Applications 1449/15 and 9882/15.] Labelling.-Consists in a machine for labelling jam jars, bottles, and other articles which must be kept in an upright position. The jar, with a label or wrapper in front, is pushed into a pocket in an horizontal intermittently rotating wheel and the vertical seam sealed. Paper from the roll 52, Fig. 2, is fed over a pasting- roller 57, a measuring-roller 58, and intermittently over the top of the machine through the feed-rollers 62, 63 vertically downward. An horizontal guillotine knife 100, Fig. 24, cuts off a blank which is simultaneously gripped by jaws 117 and lowered in front of the jar. The jars are placed in a stationary trough 204, Figs. 1 and 5, fixed at the side of the table band fed along intermittently by arms 218 fixed to a rod 206. The rod periodically oscillates to turn the arms away from the trough and is secured to a parallel rod 205, both rods being reciprocated in bearings 208. When a jar arrives opposite an opening 229 in the side of the trough the paper blank simultaneously is lowered and a pusher 230 pushes the jar and wrapper into a vertical pocket y, Fig. 7, of an horizontal intermittently rotating wrapping- wheel x lying over the table. During its transmission, the jar is supported on an oscillating conveyer 231 carried by an arm 232 pivoted to the table. The wrapping-wheel x is driven intermittently from gearing r, Fig. 2, underneath the table. Each pocket has a movable side z carried by a lever 1 pivoted to the wheel at 2 and opened fully to receive a jar by a cam lever 26 periodically oscillated by the mechanism 35, 31, Fig. 6. The movable side carries also a T-shaped member 18, Fig. 7 b, oscillating in a vertical plane so as to press the wrapper closely against non-cylindrical bodies. Both sides of the pocket contain spring-pressed rollers 7, 8. After the jar is inserted, the movable side leaves the cam 26, is closed by the spring 12, and the vertically pasted edge of the wrapper is pressed down, first by contact with cam surfaces 255, and then by spring-pressed rollers 264, both carried by a cam-actuated lever 256. After further operations in the case of wrapping the top and bottom of the jar, or without these in the case of labelling only, an ejector-plate 40 in each pocket is now operated by the lever 47, Fig. 6, to push the jar on to a platform 365, Figs. 1 and 5, from which it is moved by the pusher 369 back into the trough to be carried on by the arms 218.
