Abstract

722,226. Automatic firearms. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Aug. 15, 1952 [Aug. 18, 1951], No. 20560/52. Class 92(2). An endless conveyer belt 10, for conveying ammunition from a magazine 11 to guns 6, is of resilient construction and feeds the cartridges to a collector 40 which strips the cartridges from the belt and guides them towards the guns, the arrangement being such that the belt becomes compressed between a driving sprocket 33 and the collector and forces the cartridges in the collector towards the gun. In the construction shown, the empty belts are replenished from magazines 11, are tensioned by spring-mounted pulleys 28, are driven by motors 26 via sprockets 24, 25 and are guided by guides 32. Each belt comprises a plurality of cartridge holders 14, fitted with cartridge clips 17 and interconnected with longitudinal play, by slotted links 15. Sleeves 20 are secured to the ends of the holders and coact with springs 16 which may, as shown, each extend over several sleeves or may each extend between two adjacent sleeves. The sprocket 33 is driven by a separate motor as shown in Fig. 5. When a shot is fired, a lever 47 actuated by the gun is rocked to rock a pawl carrier 42 whose pawls 43 advance the rounds in the collector, and another round from the compressed belt is fed into the collector, the rounds being stripped from the belt by a wall 37a of the collector. In a modification the pawl and pawl carrier arrangement is dispensed with, and in another modification a single belt feeds two collectors. Fig. 13 (not shown) illustrates a spring-controlled pawl device for ensuring that the belt correctly passes over the sprocket 33, and Fig. 15 shows a modified clip which includes a part 52 which is rocked by a part 52a on the collector 40 to release the cartridge.
