A games court comprises a foundation of porous material, e.g. ashes or clinker, on which is laid a main layer of hard burned red shale which does not contain any fine material and has a spraying of binding emulsion, e.g. bituminous or tarry, applied after it has been spread so that interstices are present and preserved throughout the main layer. As shown a court comprises a layer of ashes B, and a layer of clinker C, which layers are sprayed with binding emulsion, a main layer D of hard burned red shale graded from # inch to 3/ 16 inch and a top dressing of shale graded from # inch to 1/ 16 inch.
