Abstract
Chlorinated rubber which is soluble in the usual paint and lacquer solvents is made from rubber latex by stabilizing the latex against coagulation while adding acid until the latex is at least 2N, chlorinating at 0 DEG -50 DEG C. until a chlorinated rubber of chlorine content at least 50 per cent. is formed, forming a dispersion of not more than 30 per cent solids, by diluting with water or by precipitating and redispersing in water, while adjusting this dispersion to between 0 and 8N acid or between 0 and 6N alkaline, chlorinating at 0 DEG -90 DEG C until a sample of the product, obtained by precipitating, e.g. with hot water, and drying, is completely soluble in toluene, and then, if desired, precipitating the chlorinated rubber and separating it from the p aqueous liquid.
