Abstract

721,275. Venetian blinds. BIERLICH, J. H. Feb. 26, 1951, [March 3, 1950; Sept. 28, 1950], No. 4695/51. Class 20 (3). A collapsible tape for venetian blinds comprises a chain of plane link elements hingedly joined by having an edge portion of one link projecting through a transverse slot adjacent and spaced from the edge of the neighbour link throughout the entire length of the chain, the joints providing a one-way-break hinge, breaking alternately in opposite directions. A slotsupporting chain is made up of alternate elements 10, 12 of thin metal, celluloid, polyvinyl, &c., plate linked together by the engagement of the edges of plate 12 in transverse slots 16a, 16b in plate 10 so that ears 13a, 13b of the one plate grip behind ears 42a, 42b of the other. One-way break hinge joints are provided as by means of oppositely offset pocket-forming portions 21a, 21b at the ends of plate 12. Instead of two types of link a single type may be used embodying a slot at one end and an offset portion at the other, the links being connected so that the pockets of adjacent links open in opposite directions. The links may be assembled by a tool in which a link is changed so that its edge is curved to permit fitting in the slot of an adjacent link. Slat-supporting rungs comprise bars 50 having end projecting ears 53a, 53b, beyond notches enabling the bar to extend through an aperture 48 in the pocket of links 12, the bars being insertible by being bent slightly or by the provision of slots in the links extending from the corners of aperture 48, or longitudinal slots at the end of the bars may provide sufficient elasticity for the ears to pass through the aperture. Instead of separate rungs 50, projections 120a, 120b may extend from notches in the slat edges into the link chain apertures. Top and bottom bars are beaded to accommodate reinforcement wires which also pass through the rolled edges of the top and bottom links to serve as hinge pins. In a modification the slats are slotted to provide ears for engagement with links of standard form. The blind may be mounted between the surfaces of double windows.
