Abstract
721,270. Optical prisms. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. March 5, 1948 [Jan. 9, 1947], No. 762/47. Class 97 (1). To afford an indirect view of the whole or a large part of the sky, a light-directing device comprises an erecting prism having formed as an externally reflecting mirror, at least one of its faces 1, 2 parallel to the median plane (i.e. the plane containing all incident rays which enter one 45 degree face and are transmitted in the same plane from the opposite 45 degree face). The prism may be formed as a truncated regular pyramid having an even number of sides, Fig. 6. The device is mounted for rotation about an axis in the median plane, parallel to one of the 45 degree faces and displaced from the centre of the prism by an amount varying for different values of Á and proportional to the distance between the parallel faces 1, 2. In astronomical apparatus an incident light beam is transmitted by the prism to a fixed telescope having a longitudinal axis intersecting the axis of rotation at its mid-point.
