A wire &c. reeling machine comprises a reel and means for rotating it while reciprocating it at a speed to closely coil the wire, in combina. tion with a wire guide and a co-planar laying-on pulley 10 mounted with freedom to rotate about an axial support, parallel with the reel axis, so that the wire is fed at right angles to the reel, the laying-on pulley 10 being mounted so that it may be displaced axially on its support 9 by the travelling wire, while being closely coiled, when such displacement is required. The bobbin or reel 35 to be wound with wire &c. is held between a driven trunnion 1 and a trunnion 2 pressed against the other reel flange by a rod 28 urged by pneumatic pressure in a cylinder 29, the air being controlled by a cock 30 and a hand lever 31. The trunnion 1 is driven by an electric motor 11 through gearing 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, the gear 15 being splined on the shaft 14 to allow driving to be effected although the bobbin &c. 35, is reciprocated with pillars 3, 4 on a base 5 which is moved to and fro on bars 6 by a hydraulic ram 20 operated by a cylinder 21 to which liquid is distributed by a valve box 22 operated by solenoids 40, 41 energized through spaced electrical contacts and switches 36, 38, 37, 39 opened and closed automatically by the reciprocating carriage 5. The contacts 36, 37 are preferably microadjustable ". Liquid is supplied from a tank 27 and delivered to the valve box 22 by a pump 23 driven by a constant-speed electric motor 24 through a variable-speed gear 25 adjustable, as required, by a control handle 26. The wire is delivered to the bobbin, &c. 35 over pulleys 32, 34, 10, the pulley 32 being a measuring pulley operating a cyclometer 33. A cut-out for the reel drive may be operated from the measuring pulley 32.
