Abstract

720,794. Vaccinating-apparatus. GUYE, G. March 9, 1953 [Oct. 14, 1952], No. 6486/53. Class 81 (2). An apparatus for vaccinating by scarification comprises a sharp interchangeable member carried by a support rotatably mounted in a circular case and projecting through the wall to be applied to the subject's skin, means to adjust. the cutting depth, means to adjust the angular travel of the support according to the length of the scarification to be effected, and spring means to bring back the support and member brusquely to its initial position, in order to effect the scarification. As shown the apparatus comprises a case 5 in which is rotatably mounted a disc 4 carrying, in a radial groove, a four pointed blade 1 the points or teeth 2 projecting through arcuately shaped openings 7 provided in the covering member 6 of the case. The disc is screwed on to an arbor 8 which is provided with a handle 9 for turning the disc whilst winding up a spring 10 anchored at one end to the case 5 and at the other to the disc 4. Four notches 11, 12, 13, 14, are provided at the periphery of the disc these co-operating with a catch 15 provided with a control lever 16 oscillating on an arbor 67 and acted upon by a spring 18. To each of the notches 11, 12, 13, 14, corresponds a determined angular position of the blade 1, starting from which the teeth of this blade can effect scarifications of a determined length. The covering member 6 bears on its outer face centimetric indications "11", "16", "21", "26" which correspond to the four angular positions of the blade. The depth of cut is varied by enabling the disc 4 to slide longitudinally in the case and for this purpose the arbor 8 is surrounded by a threaded sleeve 25 which is screwed into a tapped hole 26 of the case and is provided at one end with a milled head 27 and at the other with a bushing 28 which can slide in a boring 29 in the case. The head 27 bears a graduation which, in conjunction with a mark on the case, indicates the depth of cut. A lock nut 30 is provided. In operation the disc is turned by the handle to the desired position "11", "16", "21" or "26" the catch 15 snapping into the appropriate notch. The depth of cut is adjusted by means of the head 27 and the apparatus is placed against the patient, the control lever 16 pressed, and the disc and blade released to enable them to return to their initial position brusquely the points 2 thereby producing in the skin the desired scarification.
