Abstract

In making a mobile starch-base dusting powder, starch granules in water, e.g. at least 25 per cent. of water computed on the weight of starch, are intimately mixed and coated with a finely divided, freshly precipitated, water-insoluble inorganic salt or hydroxide whose particles are smaller than the starch granules and the coated starch is then dried and, if necessary, ground to a fine powder. The starch may be dispersed in water with two water-soluble inorganic compounds which react to form a finely divided precipitate. For example, aqueous solutions of the following compounds may be added to starch dispersions; aluminium sulphate and tri-sodium phosphate, aluminium sulphate and soda ash, Epsom salts and tri-sodium phosphate, cupric sulphate and sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride and soda ash, calcium chloride and magnesium sulphate, tri-sodium phosphate and calcium chloride, sodium silicate and hydrochloric acid, zinc sulphate and sodium hydroxide, barium chloride and sodium sulphate. Starch may be coated with freshly precipitated magnesium hydroxide. Alternatively, aqueous solutions of aluminium sulphate and tri-sodium phosphate may be mixed and the resulting suspension of aluminium phosphate may then be mixed with an aqueous dispersion of starch. Preferably, at least one part by weight of the water-insoluble salt or hydroxide is used to coat each 6800 parts of starch.ALSO:In making mobile starch-base dusting powders, which may be used as carriers for fungicides, insecticides and medicaments, starch granules in water, e.g. at least 25 per cent. of water computed on the weight of starch, are intimately mixed and coated with a finely divided, freshly precipitated water-insoluble inorganic salt or hydroxide whose particles are smaller than the starch granules and the coated starch is then dried and, if necessary, ground to a fine powder. For example, aqueous solutions of the following compounds may be added to starch dispersions; aluminium sulphate and tri-sodium phosphate, aluminium sulphate and soda ash, Epsom salts and tri-sodium phosphate, cupric sulphate and sodium hydroxide which precipitate a fungicide, calcium chloride and soda ash, calcium chloride and magnesium sulphate, tri-sodium phosphate and calcium chloride, sodium silicate and hydrochloric acid, zinc sulphate and sodium hydroxide, barium chloride and sodium sulphate.
