Abstract
720,093. Cycle fork shock absorbers; mud guards. SOC. FRANCAIS DE MECANIQUE ET PIECES DETACHEES, S.F.M.P.D. June 8, 1951 [Aug. 8, 1950], No. 13714/51. Classes 136(1) and 136(3). A shock absorber assembly for the forks of cycles or like vehicles consists of a link pivotally connected between its ends to the fork head and at one end to the frame, at least one casing in which the fork head can freely slide and which is pivotally mounted on another point on the frame, so as to take up variable inclinations as a function of the reactions of the fork, and at least one bi-directional shock absorber connected between the other end of the link and a lug fixed at the lower end of the casing. As shown, a bicycle front fork consists of a pair of tubes 20 each slidable in a casing 22. The two casings 22 are bridged by cross-pieces 23, 24 to the lower of which is welded a pair of oppositelyextending lugs 25, 26, lug 25 being pivoted to the steering column 1 at 7. A bracket 4 on the upper part of column 1 supports pivoted to it at 5 a pair of co-extending links 8 joined at their outer ends by a pin 9. The tops of fork tubes 20 are pivoted to links 8 at 34. A shock absorber is connected between the pin 9 and a pin 19 on lug 26 and consists of a piston 11 working in a sealed cylinder 12 and damped pneumatically, having springs 15, 16 on either side for urging it to a neutral position in the cylinder, spring 15 being stronger than spring 16. In operation the fork tubes slide in the casings 22 so as to act on the shock absorber and since this alters the angle between the links 8 and lugs 25, 26 the casings tilt towards and away from the steering column during such sliding. Forward and rearward shocks on the fork consequently cause sliding of the tubes 20 in casings 22 and are thus damped in addition to vertical shocks. Mud-guards. These are attached to the fork by a bridge piece 29 secured by a long bolt 27 between lugs 28 on the tubes 20. A lug 30 welded on the piece 29 is drilled for reception of a bolt for securing the mudguard to it.
