Abstract

Sponge material is made by forming dispersed bubbles in a solution of polyvinyl alcohol containing less than 10 per cent. residual hydrolyzable material in the molecule, and a froth stabilizing wetting agent, reacting the alcohol with formaldehyde in the presence of an inorganic acid catalyst and in a mould, the process being characterized by adding an organic nitrogen compound having at least one reactive hydrogen atom on a nitrogen atom and in an amount capable of forming a reaction product with part only of the formaldehyde. Specified nitrogen compounds are p-toluene sulphonamide, casein, glue, corn protein, soya bean protein, sulphamic acid, triethylene tetramine, acetanilide, guanine, diethanolamine, sulphanilic acid, urea, hydantoin, methyl hydantoin and dimethyl hydantoin. Sulphuric acid is the specified inorganic acid. Specification 682,313 is referred to.
