Abstract
719,478. Motor vehicles. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT-GES. Feb. 6, 1952 [Feb. 6, 1951], No. 3125/52. Classes 79(3) 79(4) and 79(5) In a motor vehicle a member is connected to the frame so as to swing about a transverse axis, supports a pair of vehicle wheels by springs abutting the member in a transverse plane, and supports the driving unit, preferably comprising the engine and gearing, in a transverse plane located on the side of the spring abutment plane opposite to the transverse axis. As shown the invention is applied to a vehicle having its engine 10, clutch 11 and changespeed gear 12 formed as a unit and arranged between steerable front wheels 23 and driving the rear wheels (not shown) through a propeller shaft 33. Alternatively the unit may be arranged at the rear or may drive the wheels 23. The vehicle frame comprises longitudinal members 13, 14 connected together at the front end by a transverse member 15. To the member 15 is resiliently connected at 18 a horse-shoe shaped member 16 which is also resiliently connected at 19, 20 to the members 13, 14. Alternatively the mounting 18 may be a pivotal connection. The wheels 23 are guided from the member 16 by superposed links 24 and helical springs 26. The engine unit is resiliently mounted on the member 16 at 29, 30, such mountings being disposed on or behind a vertical plane containing the centre of gravity of the unit. Also mounted on the member 16 is a radiator 34 and the steering gear 35. The engine unit has an extension 32 which is resiliently mounted on the frame by means of a semi-annular rubber mounting 31.
