Abstract

Cation exchangers, insoluble in water and weakly alkaline solutions, are produced by copolymerizing water or water-alcohol mixtures in (1) a water-soluble, unsaturated, polymerizable, monocarboxylic acid and/or water-soluble salt thereof with (2) a water soluble unsaturated polymerizable organic compound which contains at least two polymerizable ethylenic groups and which may be between 0.01 and 40 per cent. of the total monomers. Examples of (1) are acrylic and methacrylic acids, which may be partially replaced with fumaric acid, and of (2) are the reaction products of polyamines with acrylic or methacrylic acid, e.g. ethylene diacrylamide or the trimeric reaction product of formalin and acrylonitrile. Water-soluble polymerizable organic compounds containing no acid or salt group, such as acrylamide, methacrylamide and acrylonitrile, may also be present. Catalysts which may be used are hydrogen peroxide, persulphates and, in particular, combinations of the latter with reducing compounds such as sodium bisulphite and formamidine sulfinic acid. The copolymers are separated from their gels by evaporation of the solvent, addition of electrolytes, freezing out or the removal of water with another solvent. In examples the trimeric product of formalin and acrylonitrile is copolymerized with (1) sodium acrylate; (2) and (3) acrylic acid. The exchangers produced have marked swelling capacity and have therapeutic uses.
