Abstract

A self-supporting permselective cationic film comprises (a) a matrix of polyethylene, polyisobutylene, vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and a vinyl ester of a lower aliphatic acid such as vinyl acetate and (b) particles of an insoluble, infusible cation-exchange resin of the sulphonic or carboxylic type intimately and uniformly dispersed throughout the matrix, the particles being of such a size as to pass through a U.S. Standard Sieve No. 50. The cation-exchange resin is preferably present in an amount equal to 25 per cent. to 75 per cent. of the total dry-weight of the film. The synthetic rubber may be polybutadiene, polyisoprene, neoprene or a copolymer of butadiene and styrene or acrylonitrile, and an example refers to the use of a matrix comprising a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and a linear polyester resin made from propylene glycol and sebacic acid. The sulphonated cation-exchange resins may be the sulphonated phenol-aldehyde products described in Specifications 489,437, 498,251, 515,517, 516,609, and 521,207 or may be those made by copolymerizing a monovinyl hydrocarbon such as styrene and a polyvinyl hydrocarbon such as divinylbenzene and sulphonating the resultant copolymer. Carboxylic cation exchange resins which are utilizable are those prepared by polymerizing an unsaturated acid such as acrylic or methacrylic acid with a polyvinyl compound such as divinyl benzene.ALSO:A self-supporting permselective cationic film comprises (a) a matrix of polyethylene, polyisobutylene, vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and a vinyl ester of a lower aliphatic acid such as vinyl acetate and (b) particles of an insoluble, infusible cation-exchange resin of the sulphonic or carboxylic type intimately and uniformly dispersed throughout the matrix, the particles being of such a size as to pass through a U.S. Standard Sieve No. 50 (see Group IV (a)). Specifications 489,437, 498,251, 515,517, 516,609, and 521,207, [all in Group IV], are referred to.
