Abstract

719,297. Envelopes. GULSON ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., CROMPTON, J. B.. HAYWARD, H., and HUTCHINSON, A. D. May 21, 1952 [Feb. 21, 1951], No. 4175/51. Class 146(2) To enable a strip assembly of interconnected envelopes to be fed through an addressing or other printing machine, the normally lower edge of each envelope has a portion 10 thereof extending over and free from that end part of the flap 3 of the next envelope connected thereto so that a lip 11 is formed which can be engaged by feeding means in the printing machine. As shown, the assembly comprises separate blanks of paper or plastic material each having a back 2, a flap 3, and a front 4 provided with side wings 5 and transverse wing 6, and they are joined together in strip form such that the back 2 forms the back of the preceding envelope when it is secured by adhesive to the wings 5, 6 of that envelope. The assembly of the blanks, coating of the side edges of the backs 2 and flaps 3 at 9 with adhesive, folding of the wings 5, 6, and creasing and perforating the flaps 3 at 7 and 8, respectively, can be carried out in the machine described in Specification 719,298, [Group XVII]. In affixing each back 2 to a front 4, the back is so positioned that a narrow margin 10 of the wing 6 is left free from the back 2 which is adhesively affixed to the remaining portion of the wing 6. This free portion 10 extends over the upper edge of the flap 3 of the next envelope, and provides a lip 11 which can be engaged by a claw of a feeding means in a typewriter or an addressing or franking machine. The wings 5, 6 could be formed on the back portions 2, instead of, or in addition to, those on the front portions 4. In a modification, the envelope assembly is formed from a continuous strip which provides an alternating series of flaps and fronts, and the backs are provided by affixing thereto, by adhesive, blanks which each comprise the back, side wings, and lower transverse wing. Each such blank is affixed so that a narrow portion of the lower transverse folded wing is left free from the front, and a transverse lip is provided.
