[Also in Divisions B6 and G5] A single sheet insert 11 of heavier stock than newsprint is placed between inner and outer sections 17, 13 of a newspaper, the insert comprising a rectangular panel 25 with a flap 33 foldably attached thereto and carrying an advertising article such as a postcard, coupon, reply envelope, samples &c. In one form, Fig. 1, the flap 33 has a coupon or return postcard 39 thereon defined by perforated lines 41, and advertising matter is printed on the panel 25. In other embodiments, an envelope may be attached to the panel 25 by means of an extension of the closing flap of the envelope (Fig. 18), or perforated lines on the flap and panel may outline an envelope blank (Figs. 19, 20) which has lines of adhesive for completing the envelope when the blank is detached. Perforation lines on the panel may outline a letter card (Figs. 21-23). Sample tubes e.g. of toothpaste, may be enclosed in an envelope which is secured to the panel by stapling (Figs. 15-16). Samples of material for making beverages, or of medicinal tablets, &c., or of viscous liquids such as catsup may be placed in compartments of a package 73, Fig. 10, formed by bonding two flexible sheets along their edges and along lines 75. The package may be secured to the panel by glue at its corners or by providing it with a coating of a thermoplastic material which is bonded to the panel. As shown, the package 73 is provided with an edge part 78 which is attached to the panel as follows:- Fastening sheets together by punching.-The edge part 79 and panel 25C, Fig. 12, are pierced by a sharp pointed triangular-section tool 81 which causes small flaps 83 to be punched out. Pressure is subsequently applied to crease the flaps and secure the parts 79, 25C. Signature gathering; feeding sheets.-After the outer folded section 13, Fig. 2, of a newspaper has been fed from a pile into a V-shaped carrier 57, Fig. 6, of a newspaper stuffing machine, the carrier moves adjacent to a pile of inserts 25, the bottom one of which is fed by suction separators 43, Fig. 5, and grippers 51 on a rotating drum, into the carrier. During subsequent movements of the carrier 57, inner newspaper sections are deposited therein from further piles. The suction separators engage the flap 33 of the insert so that there are two thicknesses of material between the separators and the next insert thus preventing the suction acting on the next insert and withdrawing it together with the lowest insert.
