[Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A continuous wire feed mechanism for straightening, shearing, &c., machines has a contractible collet which initially holds the wire lightly and grips it tightly when the collet body is moved in the feed direction. Wire W is fed from a reel 18 past straightening rolls 25, rotary straighteners 12, 13 to an emergency shear 14 operated by a solenoid controlled by a switch 22 operated when the reel 18 is swung about a pin 21 by excess tension of the wire. The wire is fed by heads 34, 35 to a shear mechanism 16 and falls into bins 17. The feed mechanism comprises grippers 41, 42 on heads 34, 35 reciprocated in opposite directions by variable eccentrics 36. Each head carries a sleeve 43 and a detachable cap 44 with conical opening 45. A sleeve 47 is pressed by a spring 48 to engage balls 63 with light pressure in the opening 45. A split collet 60 is keyed to the sleeve 47. On movement of the head in the direction of feed the balls 63 are cammed inwards to tighten the collet. The head 35 carries a fixed apertured cutter 65 and a pivoted apertured cutter 66 operated by a cam, Fig. 5, not shown, engaging a lever 75. The cut lengths fall into a hopper with gapped bottom closed by a deflector plate movable to divert the lengths into different bins.
