Abstract

718,699. Grinding; sawing; planing. HOBBS, G. B. March 31, 1952, [March 30, 1951.] No. 7436/51. Classes 60, 145 (1) and 145 (2). A multiple machine-tool comprises a portable support 9, Fig. 1, attached to the housing 3 of an electric motor 1, a disc 13 rotatable about a horizontal axis on the support 9, and several machine-tools mounted on the disc and having their own worktables or other accessories, wherein each tool can be brought into position for use and into driving connection with the common driving motor 1 and locked in that position. A sanding disc 17, Fig. 2, a jig-saw 14, a circular saw 15, and a planing tool 16 or a grinding wheel may be supported on the disc which is rotatable on a shaft 11, Fig. 1, fixed in the support 9 and has a spring-pressed pin 28 to engage pockets 29 in the support after indexing. One or more pinions 21, 22, on the spindle 6 of the motor, drive pinions 23, 24 on the tool-shafts 46, 16 which may be arranged at different distances from the shaft 11 and lubricated through passages 27 in the wall 25 of the disc or, if the bearing 19 of the tool-spindle 16 is integral with the frame of the particular machine, in the bearing only. The support 9 is spigoted on the housing 3 by a ring 7, which is divided to ventilate the motor. A work-bench 31, Fig. 2, for the saw 15 is secured adjustably to the disc 13 and may be moved outwardly to guard the edge of the saw. An adjustable fence 36 is provided and may also be used for the planing tool 16. The jig-saw blade is reciprocated by a crank-disc 45 and spring-pressure. A chuck, buffing disc or the like, or a pulley for driving other tools, may be provided on that end of the shaft 6 remote from the support 9. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a lay-shaft to rotate the tool shafts which are indexed into alignment therewith and coupled by an Oldham coupling, the disc having a small amount of axial freedom to facilitate coupling.
