Abstract

Coating compositions for high molecular weight linear polyester fabrics comprise a polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation product, an organic polyisocyanate, and a solvent. Polyisocyanates used are ethylene-, hexamethylene-, decyclohexylmethane-, m-phenylene- and toluylene 2:4 di-isocyanate, or toluene-2:4:6- or triphenyl-methane-4:41:411-triisocyanate. Reaction products of the isocyanates with soybisulphites, or acetoacetic esters of phenylmethanes may also be used. Solvents specified are butyl- and ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl cyclohexanone to which may be added diluents, e.g. benzene. Pigments, natural or synthetic waxes, e.g. polythene, dibutyl phthalate, &c., may also be present in the composition. The condensation products may be produced from adipic, sebacic, or phthalic acid, and glycerol, ethylene glycol, sorbitol, pentacrythritol, diethylene glycol, butylene glycol, or mixtures thereof. An ethylene glycol-glycerol-adipic acid condensation product in the molar ratio 3:1:3 is preferred, but others glycol-glycerol ratios may be used. Examples describe the preparation of condensation products by heating (1) glycerol, ethylene glycol, adipic or sebacic acid for 1-2 hours up to 200 DEG C. with passage of carbon dioxide; after 4 1/2 -8\ba1/2 hours at 200 DEG C., the product is discharged, (2) adipic acid, 1:3-butylene glycol and trimethylolpropane at 200 DEG C. with passage of carbon dioxide.
