Abstract

775,878. Coated fabrics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6473/54. Class 140. Textile fabric, e.g. of nylon is coated with a composition comprising a polyester (a polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation product), a " mixed " polymer (a polyhydric alcohol - aliphatic dicarboxylic acid - aromatic monocarboxylic acid condensation product), and an organic polyisocyanate and thereafter subjected to a heat treatment. A polyisocyanate-modified polyester is thereby produced which is plasticized by the mixed polyester. A second coating containing no mixed polyester may be applied. The composition may be applied by dipping, padding or spreading a solution thereof in a solvent, e.g. butyl or ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl or methyl isobutyl ketone, or methyloyclohexanone. Benzene may be used as a diluent. The heat treatment may be effected at 90-120‹ C. Before or after the heat treatment the coating may be polished, e.g. by calendering, and embossed. Other substances which may be present are pigments, waxes, conventional plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, antibacterial and fireproof agents and cellulose acetobutyrate. the polyester plasticizer is liquid at normal temperature and has a molecular weight of at least 500, preferably 700. It may be obtained from mixtures of glycols and acids. A mixture of aromatic acids containing up to 50 per cent of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids may be employed. Instead of using free acid an acid chloride or lower alkyl ester may be employed. Glycols specified are ethylene, propylene, 1 : 2-propylene, diethylene and 1 3-butylene glycol. Dibusic carboxylic acids specified are succinic, glutaric, adipic, methyl adipic, pimelic and suberic acid. Aromatic monocarboxylic acids specified are benzoic, o-, m- and p-toluic, and chlorobenzoic acid. Aliphatic monocarboxylic acids specified are lauric, palmitic, stearic and oleic acid, mixtures of fatty acids derived from vegetable and animal oil, and rosin acids. The ratio of dicarboxylic acid to monocarboxylic acid is preferably at least 3 to 2. The amount of glycol used may be stoichiometrically equivalent to, or greater than, the amount of acid used. The proportion of mixed polyester may be 20-200 per cent of the ordinary polyester. Acids specified for production of the ordinary polyester are adipic, sebacic and phthalic acid. Glycols specified are glycerol, trimethylolpropane, hexanetriol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, and ethylene, diethylene and butylene glycol. It may have a hydroxyl value of 2-7 per cent. It may be an ethylene glycolglycerol-adipic acid (3 : 1 : 3) condensation product having a hydroxyl content of 4-6 per cent and a viscosity, when freshly prepared, of 100-200 poises at 20‹ C. Organic polyisocyanates specified are ethylene, hexamethylene, dicyclohexylmethane, m-phenylene, toluylene - 2 : 4 - diisocyanate and toluene - 2 : 4 : 6- triphenylmethane - 4 : 4<SP>1</SP> : 4<SP>11</SP> - triisocyanate. The disulphate, acetoacetic ester and phenyl urethane derivatives may also be used. The amount of polyisocyanate may be 20-80 per cent of the ordinary polyester.
