Abstract

718,131. Recording electrical changes in the body. BREAKELL, C. C., PARKER, C. S., and CHRISTOPHERSON, F. May 18, 1953 [Feb. 16, 1952], No. 4157/52. Class 81(2) Apparatus for detecting and recording electrical changes in the body resultant on its physiological processes comprises a detecting device or, devices for application to the body, a portable radio transmitter to be carried by the person being investigated and in electrical connection with the detecting device a radio receiver for receiving signals radiated by the transmitter and converting the signals to a form suitable for application to a recording device, and a recording device whereto the receiver's output is applied. Silver disc electrodes applied to the body receive electric potentials which are passed through a transmitter comprising an amplifier 1, an oscillator 2 turned to a fixed frequency between 2,000 and 1,500 cycles/sec for producing - amplitude modulation, a phase modulator 4 connected with a crystal oscillator 3, frequency multipliers 5 and an output stage 6 connected with an aerial which may be mounted on the transmitter or is in the form of a flexible metallic strip attached to the patient's clothing. More than one channel may be provided between the patient and the phase modulator 4, the oscillators 2 of each channel being tuned to different frequencies to avoid interference: The receiver is of superheterodyne type and comprises a mixer, 1. F. amplifier and limiter 1r provided with a local oscillator 2r, a discriminator 3r, filter 4r, demodulator 5r and amplifier 6r. The output from the amplifier 6r is connected with a recording apparatus such as a cathode ray oscilloscope or a pen recorder. Each channel in the transmitting apparatus is provided with a separate channel in the receiver comprising filter, demodulator, amplifier and recording means in connection with the discriminator 3r.
