Abstract
717,961. Semi-conductor amplifying circuits ; radio receiving apparatus. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTINGHOUSE. March 21, 1950 [April 7, 1949], No. 7010/50. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (6) Each stage of a multi-stage amplifier employs a semi-conductor device having base, control and acceptor electrodes, and the acceptor electrode of one stage is directly connected to the control electrode of the next stage. Fig. 1 shows an amplifier arrangement which is stated to be adapted for use as a radio receiver. Each stage comprises a semi-conductor amplifier Sc and signals from aerial A are detected and amplified in the first stage and then further amplified in the two following stages. Each amplifier device may be of the type described in Specification 697,164, [Group XXXIX], and comprises a point control electrode 1c, a point acceptor electrode 1a, and a base electrode connected to points f. A battery S is connected to a potentiometer R and the first two acceptor electrodes are connected directly to their next control electrode and, also through resistances Ra, to tappings on potentiometer R. The last acceptor electrode supplies the output to loudspeaker HP. The base electrodes, except for the first stage, are connected to tappings on the resistances Ra thereby providing bias for the control electrode. Condensers C are provided to complete the signal ouput circuits of each stage. Condensers C<SP>1</SP> may be provided between the base electrodes and the potentiometer tappings which, it is stated, reduces the damping effect of the low input impedance of each stage. Germanium or silicon may be used as semi-conductor material for the amplifying devices, or a "composite" crystal may be used.
