Abstract

A fuel composition comprises a hydrocarbon oil of the gasoline boiling range containing an organo-lead anti-knock agent and 0.3 to 3 theories, based on the anti-knock agent, of an oil-soluble halogen-free organic compound having at least one non-aromatic, bromine reactive unsaturated bond which compound has a vapour pressure of less than 1 atmosphere at the normal end boiling point of the hydrocarbon oil. The compound containing the unsaturated bond preferably has a chain of 8 or more carbon atoms; the chain may be straight, branched or cyclic, or any combination thereof. The unsaturated bond may be olefinic or acetylenic. The compounds may have polar groups and thus may be acids, especially carboxylic acids, esters, alcohols, amines, amides, nitriles, ketones ethers or nitro- or halogen-substituted unsaturated hydrocarbons. Compounds used include octadecenylamine, oleic acid, oleyl alcohol, methyl oleate, octadecene-1, linoleic acid, p-nitrostyrene, undecylenic acid, cetene, linolenic acid, 8, 12, 16-trimethyl-7-heptadecene-4-one, decenoic amide, isopropyl oleate, tetradecene-1. 1, 1-dimethyl - 8 - heptadecene - 1 - ol, tetradecyne-2, ricinoleic acid, N-methyloctadecene-1-amine, linseed oil, chalmoogric acid and indene. The amount of compound used is preferably between 0.1 and 2 theories. The lead anti-knock compounds used are tetra-alkyl lead compounds, such as tetra ethyl lead. The unsaturated compounds are preferably used in conjunction with halogen-containing scavengers such as ethylene dibromide, ethylene dichloride, acetylenetetrabromide, hexachloropropylene, mono- and polyhalopropanes, mono- and polyhalobutanes, mono- and polyhalopentanes, and polyhaloalkyl benzenes. The halogen scavengers are used in quantities from 0.75 to 1.5 theories based on the lead content. The unsaturated compounds may be mixed with the lead anti-knock compound (with which a halogen scavenger may already be mixed) to form a concentrate for subsequent incorporation into gasoline base stocks The compositions may also include corrosion inhibitors and stabilizers, e.g. 2, 4-dimethyl-6-tertiarybutyl phenol and other alkyl phenols, N, N1-dibutyl-p-phenylenediamine, hydroquinone and phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine, and dyes.
