717,618. Refrigerators. BERKEFELD FILTERS &. WATER SOFTENERS, Ltd. March 27, 1953 [April 8, 1952], No. 8971/52. Class 29 [Also in Group V] In cooling cabinets the walls of which are cast of porous material, e.g. plaster of Paris, from the surface of which water is evaporated, a hydrolyzed solution of ethyl silicate in aqueous medium free from organic solvents is incorporated in the porous material before casting to harden it and prolong its life. The solution is added to the water used to make the plaster in the proportion of 50 parts plaster to 1 part ethyl silicate solution by weight. When the cast has dried it may be treated with a water repellant substance, e.g. a silicone or the vapour of dimethylchlorosilane to a depth of not more than 1/16 inch. The cooling cabinet comprises an open-fronted box 1 of plaster of Paris cast in one piece with a lining 2 of aluminium or stainless steel, and water is placed in a depression 4 at the top, the surface of which is not treated with the water repellant substance. Feet 3 are cast at the bottom and a door 6 also cast of plaster of Paris is hinged to the open front and provided with a plastic or metal handle 11. The door is sloped backwards so as to be self-closing. Gypsum powder may be placed in the reservoir 4 to avoid solution of the plaster wall.
