Abstract
717,346. Control of D. C. motors. GODWILLMAN, A. March 10, 1953 [March 12, 1952], No. 6432/52. Class 38(3) A remote control system comprises a reversing switch S which, when moved from neutral contact N to forward contact F, completes a circuit from battery B over cam-operated switch G to energize solenoids 1, 3. An electric motor M is thus started with its armature connected in series with field winding W and resistor R. After a predetermined period, the resistor R is short-circuited by means of a time-delay relay P. A motor-driven cam C eventually opens the switch G to disconnect the motor which continues to rotate however due to inertia, thereby closing switch H and operating solenoids 2, 4, for reversing the drive. The switch H is re-opened to stop the motor before the load begins to reverse, the resistor R being included in circuit during the oscillating period. When the switch S is returned to the contact N a circuit is completed over switches J, K, to connect the motor for return to its neutral position in which switch J opens to stop the drive. Operation of the motor in the reverse direction is effected by actuation of the switch S to engage contact A. The arrangement described may be extended to provide a system having seven positions of the switch S for controlling the operation of the cam to a corresponding number of positions, Fig. 7 (not shown). The cam C may be circular or in the form of a rack driven by a pinion. The application to forward and reverse control arrangements for ships is referred to.
