Abstract

863,327. Selective control systems. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. July 3, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 18427/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In a selective control system of the kind in which one of a plurality of parallel leads P, N, D, L, R is marked by the selector 1, the receiver being a seeking device which is driven until it finds the marked lead, there are a further series of circuits a, b, c, d, e on the selector and receiver which, when the seeking device over-shoots the marked lead, reverse the driving means before the next selective position is reached. The apparatus is described applied to the control of a gear-box, the gears being selected by the rotation of arm 4. Each of the positions P, N, D, L and R are gearselecting positions and the intermediate contacts prevent an adjacent gear being engaged by the over-shoot. The selector switch 1 has segments 11 and 12 connected to negative and positive supply respectively. The selected terminal (P, as shown) is disconnected. Leads on one side of the marked one are energized negatively and those on the other side are positive. The arm 4 is connected to relays 14, 15 connected to negative and positive source, so that if the arm contacts a positive lead relay 14 operates and if it contacts a negative lead relay 15 operates. The driving motor 5 has two field windings F1, F2, energized respectively by relays 15 and 14 and oppositely polarized to cause the motor to run in one direction or the other. The arrangement is such that the arm 14 is always driven towards the marked lead. If the selector is moved to position N, leads P and a become negative and b, D, &c. become positive. Arm 4 picks up negative voltage from lead P and relay 15 operates to energize field winding F1, the motor then running to drive the arm 4 towards N. If it over-shoots it engages lead b before reaching the next gear-engaging position D. This lead is now positive, and the motor reverses, bringing the arm 4 back to the marked position N. Braking means may be included to bring the motor to rest as soon as possible after reaching the selected position. Segments m and n return the arm when it over-shoots the end positions R and P.
