Abstract

Cellular moulded loudspeaker diaphragms, which are 0.8 to 3 mm thick may be made from synthetic resin lacquers foamed by the addition of inflating agents. The cells in the foam have a diameter of the order of 1 mm. and the specific gravity of the diaphragm lies between 0.1 and 0.3. Synthetic resins specified are phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde condensates, silicones, polymethacrylates, and polystyrene. The inflation is limited by moulds permeable to steam. Hardening agents may be added. Very small fine threads, fibres or flakes of various materials, e.g. mica, anthracite, alummium-oxide, boron carbide, and light metals, may be added. The diaphragm may be made even thinner if it has a light supporting framework of net, fabric, or perforated material of not more more than 10 per cent. of the weight of the diaphragm. Thin strong skins, such as paper, are preferably applied to both sides of the diaphragm. These skins may be of foil or sprayed metal and are sufficiently foam-and liquid-proof to prevent baking to the mould. Further stiffening may be obtained by mica scales cemented by lacquer to the surface or embedded therein. Foamed lacquer may be spread, sprayed, or rolled uniformly on to an impermeable foam-proof support. In all cases the lacquer is heated quickly and cooled quickly. Instead of inflating agents, volatile or water soluble substances may be used and after removal of these the walls are reinforced by saturation with dilute lacquers and subsequent drying.
