Abstract

An aqueous bath, for the treatment of textiles, paper and wood pulp, contains a thermosetting resin, e.g. methylolmelamine methyl ether, dimethylol urea or dimethylol melamine, and a catalyst for hardening the resin on heating, the catalyst being produced in concentrated aqueous solution by the action on boric acid of a colourless water-soluble salt of a strong acid, having a dissociation constant of at least 2.1X10-4 and being at the most dibasic, with such a metal of the first or second group of the periodic system as possesses an atomic weight not higher than that of calcium. Salts of formic, monochloracetic, malic, glyoxylic, tartaric, fumaric, sulpharic, nitric and hydrochloric acids may be employed, specified salts being sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium and calcium chlorides and calcium nitrate. In Examples, other additions to the bath are acetate of the condensation product of stearic acid-N-methylolamide with triethanolamine, a mixture of the sodium salt of m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid with the sodium salt of the semi-ester of phthalic acid and oleic acid ethanolamide, an ethylene oxide-olein alcohol condensation product and gum tragancanth.ALSO:Yarns and fabrics, for example of regenerated cellulose or cotton, are given a resistance to creasing, swelling and shrinking, and an increased wet strength, by impregnating them with an aqueous bath containing a thermosetting resin, especially an aminoplast such as an aldehyde-urea, -thiourea or -aminotriazine condensate, and hardening the resin by heating, hardening of the resin being effected in the presence of a catalyst produced in concentrated aqueous solution by the action on boric acid of a colourless water-soluble salt of a strong acid, having a dissociation constant of at least 2.1 X 10-4 and being at the most dibasic, with such a metal of the first or second group of the periodic system as possesses an atomic weight not higher than that of calcium. The process also serves to fix mechanical effects and dyes, pigments and finishing agents on the materials. Salts of formic, monochloracetic, malic, glyoxlic, tartaric, fumaric, sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acids may be employed, specified salts being sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium and calcium chlorides and calcium nitrate. Examples are given in which the resins are methylol melamine methyl ether, dimethylol urea and dimethylol melamine, other additions to the aqueous bath being the acetate of the condensation product of stearic acid N-methylolamide with triethanolamine, a mixture of the sodium salt of m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid with the sodium salt of the semi-ester of phthalic acid and oleic acid ethanolamide, an ethylene oxide-olein alcohol condensation product and gum tragacanth.
