Abstract

<PICT:0716031/III/1> An apparatus for indicating the presence of oxidizable gases comprises catalytic contact members surrounding a heat responsive electrical element for operating danger signals, a protective gas filter surrounding the contact members, separated therefrom by an air gap and a capsule for keeping out dust and moisture drawn over the whole assembly, the contact members having been treated with a solution of platinum or palladium salts under the influence of supersonic vibrations to deposit 3 to 5 per cent. of platinum or palladium in or on the contact members. The protective filter may consist of charcoal impregnated under supersonic action with suitable solutions to deposit 5 to 10 per cent. of silver, manganese or copper thereon. In the Figure, meerschaum or coconut shell rings 1 surround a central tube 8 containing the heat responsive element, and are separated from each other by asbestos or quartz wool wadding 2. Both rings and wadding are impregnated with platinum or palladium solutions under supersonic action, e.g. at 10,000 hertz at an intensity of 10 watts/cms2 for 30 minutes. A perforated cage 3 surrounds the rings and wadding and is spaced from an outer mesh cylinder 5 by spacing frame 4. The protective filter 6, which absorbs contact poisons, particularly carbon monoxide, consists of charcoal or meerschaum granules treated as above to deposit 5-10 per cent. of silver, manganese or copper thereon, and cleansed by heating in hydrogen at 120 DEG C. The whole device is enclosed in a capsule 7 of permeable ceramic material. Specification 464,798 is referred to.
