Abstract
715,598. Tubular heat-exchange elements. ESCHER WYSS AKT.-GES. Dec. 17, 1952 [Jan. 5, 1952], No. 32005/52. Class 64(3) A heat-exchange tube, for use in circumstances where heat is transferred at the inner, outer, or both surfaces by forced convection, has a helical corrugated metal strip 2 arranged on the surface of the side or sides on which forced convection takes place, the corrugations extending in the direction of flow and those of adjacent convolutions being circumferentially staggered relatively to each other. In the drawings the strip 2 is wound hedically around a tube 5 to which it may be secured as by seam welding. An external tube 6 is pushed over the strip and the tube 5 may then be subject to a high internal pressure, or a mandrel may be used, to produce good bearing surfaces between the 'strip and the tubes. The corrugations make an angle # to the edge 3 of the strip, this angle being complementary to the pitch angle a of the strip winding. The heat exchange media flow within the tube 5 and between the two tubes. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the strip is. wound on the inner surface of an outer tube, there being an inner tube arranged like the tube 5 of Fig. 3 but acting merely as a core, the heat-exchange in this case taking place between media flowing on the inside and outside of the outer tube.
