Abstract

715,486. Jet propulsion plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1951], No. 25384/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIII] An arrangement for supporting an aircraft engine in an aircraft comprises a trunnion mounting including a stub shaft fixed to the aircraft and extending towards the engine substantially at right angles to the engine axis, and a bearing on the engine casing to be engaged by the stub shaft and to permit angular movement of the engine about the shaft axis and about an axis at right angles to both the engine axis and the stub shaft, which axis is substantially contained in the wall of the engine casing. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the engine is a turbo jet, and comprises box struts 17 radially connecting the members 14 and 18 respectively supporting the inner and outer ends of the turbine stator blades. Preferably two bearings receive two stub shafts diametrically opposite and aligned, and each in line with a box strut 17. As seen in Fig. 2, each stub shaft bears a part spherical collar 24 mating with a part spherical member 25 secured to the engine casing 18 by bolts 26 so that the axis of ' rotation mentioned above of collar 24 within member 25 is substantially within the wall casing: Bolts 26 also serve to attach the flared end 17a of box strut 17 to casing 18. Preferably one of the collars 24 is free to move axially along its stub shaft. When a crash landing occurs, the universal joint reduces the stresses imparted to the engine, especially the stator blades.
